John Henry Potter, 89 , of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015

John was born in Chattanooga on September 29, 1925. He attended Pineville Elementary, and Kirkman High School. He joined the Navy and served his country honorably during WWII. John was assigned to the Air Craft Carrier Saratoga, and battleship USS Washington on which he was a gunner. John fought at IWO Jima, Guadalcanal and numerous Islands throughout the Pacific Campaign. After his discharge from the Navy, he was employed at Combustion Engineering from which he retired. John was a member of the White Oak Church of Christ. He loved to play golf with many friends, and to work in the garden with his wife, Clara. He enjoyed fishing and hunting when he wasn't busy taking a nap. John always had a smile on his face and a contagious laugh. He was loved and will be missed by all.

John was preceded in death by his wife Clara Mae Potter; father and mother, Jess and Nell Potter; brothers Herbert Lawson, Ralph Potter and Pete Potter.

John is survived by his son Gary Potter; grandson David (Gina) Potter; great-granddaughters Anna Kate, Maggie and Kaylee Potter; three sisters Irene Jones, Barbara ( John) Barclay and Nellie Mae ( Tom) Haithcock; brother Jesse ( Joann) Potter; sister-in-law ( Widow of Pete Potter) Lorraine Potter; also numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, from 4-8pm and on Wednesday from 12:30-1:30 at Chattanooga Funeral Home-North Chapel. Funeral service for John will be conducted at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, in the funeral home chapel with Minister Jim Dearman officiating . Interment to follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
