Gene was born on October 23, 1921 in Two Rivers, son of the late Matthew and Louise (Gerl) Lewis. He was a graduate of Valders High School with the class of 1941. Gene served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France driving a truck towing an Anti-Air Craft Gun. On May 10, 1947 he married Dorothy Singer at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on December 5, 1989. Gene was a truck driver for many companies until his retirement in 1983. He also won an award for having no accidents in 29 years. Gene competed in the Wisconsin State Truck Safety Roadeo as well as the National Roadeo. He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc and currently St. Francis of Assisi. Gene was also a life long member of the Teamsters.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy; four brothers and two sisters-in-law: George Lewis, Alvin and Eleanor Lewis, Gary and Ruth Lewis, John (Red) Lewis; two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law: James Zankle, Tony and Dorothy Singer, Nannette Lewis, Marge Brandl.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be Deacon Paul Kieffer. Military Honors will be accorded by V.F.W. Otto Oas Post 659. Cremation has occurred at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and Eugene will be laid to rest at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the Pfeffer Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home and All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff on the third floor north wing at Aurora Medical Center, Manitowoc County, for all their care and compassion shown towards Gene.
