Russell C. Heider, 86, of Streator passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015 in Streator surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 23, 2015 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Leonore. Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Small officiated.

Visitation was 3-6 P.M. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. A prayer service was held at 3:00 P.M.

Burial was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Leonore. His grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Russell was born February 27, 1929 in Streator the son of Henry and Louise (Arenz) Heider. He married Grace Casey on October 1, 1949 at St. Anthony Church, Streator. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2002.

He is survived by sons, Daniel (Janet) Heider of Streator, Donald (Mary) Heider of Ottawa and Daryl (Juanita) Heider of Fulton, Missouri; grandchildren, Brian (Ashley) Heider, Craig (Kristy) Heider, Jeff Heider, Dustin (Laura) Heider, Casey (Kevin) McGrath and Jaclyn (Matthew) Beaty; great grandchildren, Bryce, Will, Carter, Adelyn and Lilyan Heider; Reed, Elle and Zeke McGrath; sisters, Doris Barr, Janette (Harlan) Strode, Joan (Robert) Henderson, and Donna Smaling; brothers, Eugene Heider and Alan (Joyce) Heider; 38 nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Roy and Richard Heider; and a sister, Maxine Brierly. Russell grew up on a farm near Leonore and graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul grade school in Leonore. He retired from the Streator Post Office in 1988 after 35 years of service. He originally started with the post office working on a mail car on the Santa Fe train from Chicago to Kansas City. While with the Streator office he worked mostly as a window clerk. He also worked part time with Eby-Brown for over 25 years. When he retired he stayed busy transporting people back and forth to airports and hospitals.

He was a member of the former St. Anthony Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Church. He was a member of the Msgr. George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council #790. He also served in the Illinois National Guard.

Russell and Grace loved to travel and spent many winters in Las Vegas. He looked forward to the family trips to the Lake of the Ozarks where he could enjoy his six grandchildren. He always enjoyed a good laugh and had a wonderful outlook on life.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
