Roy Heider

Former Humboldt County Supervisor Roy Heider died in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 19th 2009 at the Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville. He passed away peacefully at 1:00 AM after a brief struggle with respiratory problems related to Mesothelioma. His family was nearby to spend the last few precious hours of his life with him. He was 81 years old.

Roy served as 2nd District Supervisor from 1992 to 1996. He dedicated much of his life in service to his nation and his community. He served in the US Navy in both the Second World War and the Korean War. Along with his service to the County as Supervisor he served on the Board of the Southern Humboldt Community Hospital District for 12 years including several tenures as President of that Board. Roy was also a Redway Fire District Commissioner and a long time member of the Garberville - Redway Rotary Club where he served as president for two terms, in 1984 and 1991. He also served as President of the board of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Association at Shelter Cove and as Supervisor, was very instrumental in the relocation of the Lighthouse to the Cove.

He believed strongly in supporting his community and has benefitted numerous organizations and individual community members throughout his life. In 2004 the Garberville - Redway Chamber of Commerce honored him as Citizen of the Year.

Roy A. Heider was born in Tonica, Illinois on September 16th 1927. At the age of sixteen, he left home to join the Navy and was stationed overseas during World War II. Upon his return he met Humboldt County native, Laverne French in San Francisco. They were married in September of 1947 and lived for several years with Laverne’s family in Ettersburg, Ca. In those days Roy worked with Clarence French processing tanbark and then went on to work at the Brix saw mill in Briceland. Following that he worked for several years for the County Roads department.

He was recalled into service for the Korean War and after his return in 1952 he spent a memorable 3 months camping out with his extended family along the Mattole River.

Soon after, Roy built his home on Par Avenue in Redway, CA. In the ensuing years he worked for Union 76 Gas delivering fuel to ranches and logging companies throughout Southern Humboldt and eventually bought the Garberville 76 station where he established a highly successful full service station and ran a Triple AAA towing service.

He is remembered very fondly for his willingness to go that extra mile and then some to help out local residents and visitors no matter where their vehicles wound up and no matter what time of day.

Roy is survived by his three beloved daughters; Lynda (Preston) Pitts, Petaluma, Sharon (Nubar) Shahbazian, Santa Rosa and Renée (Jimi Evins) Heider, Oakland; grandchildren, Alysia Regan Petaluma and Melissa Regan-de Vogele, Paris, France; brothers, Russell Heider, Streator, IL, Eugene “Snick” Heider, Lostant, IL, and Alan Heider, Streator, IL; sisters, Doris Barr, Janette Strode, Maxine Brierly, all of Lostant, IL, Joanne “Tootie” Henderson, Geneseo, IL and Donna Smaling, Bloomington, IL; numerous nephews and nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces and a large extended circle of Humboldt friends and family.

His father, Henry Frank Heider, mother, Louise Susan Arenz Heider and brother, Richard Heider, preceded him in death.

A memorial celebration of Roy’s life will be held at the Redway Fire Hall, 155 Empire Drive, Redway, Saturday April 4th at 2:00 PM.

Roy’s family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville CA, 95542.
