Virgie was born on March 13,1910,to William David and Della Docia Hart Mathews. Her brothers were: Jack,Addis,and Eddie Mathews. Her sister was: Codie Mathews Hartzog. Virgie and Codie married first cousins. Virgie was married to Vessie Hartzog. He preceded her in death in May 1977. They lived in Bascom,Florida. Their son is Norris Hartzog.They had two grandsons and one granddaughter.
I fondly called her "Aunt Joe". My Daddy had always called her "Joe". I don't know why that was. I used to love going to Aunt Joe and Uncle Vessie's house every year. They owned a lot of farm land. I used to love to sit on their porch and fan the gnats away with a hand held fan. I really enjoyed doing that. I was just a kid then. Aunt Joe was a good cook,and I used to love to eat in their big country kitchen.
After Uncle Vessie passed away,Aunt Joe moved to Altamonte Springs,Florida and lived with her son and his wife. Aunt Joe was sick whenever my Daddy passed away in May 1988. They said she grieved herself to death over that. Aunt Joe passed away on June 10,1988. She is greatly missed.
