Christopher Columbus "Kit" Nettles was the first child born to William J. and Sarah Nettles, he was born on April 11, 1833 in Elizabeth City County Virginia. Christopher married Mary France Todd, daughter of Elias Todd and Elizabeth Nettles, on February 1, 1855 in Elizabeth City County Virginia. They had thirteen children Charles Wesley, Missouri who died as and infant, Mary Emma, Solomon who died as and infant, Martha Jane "Mattie", India, Danial Webster "Webb", Katurah "Tootsie", Henry Clay, John who died at the age of five, Lydia Auburn, Martha "Sallie" and Minnie F Nettles. Christopher and Mary made their home on the lower Peninsula all of their lives. Census records show that Christopher was a framer all of his life. Christopher enlisted in the confederate army on May 14, 1861 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, into the Wythe Riffles 115th Regiment, Virginia Militia Company A, that company later became the 32 Regiment Virginia Infantry. Muster rolls show that Christopher was in Company K of the 32 Regiment and was absent sick in the hospital at West Point, Virginia beginning in December of 1861. May 26 1871, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia he was elected to be an assessor to serve for a one year term and was bonded with F A Schmitz and Elisa Todd. Christopher was bonded as a assessor for the Wythe section on June 28 1871. The Big Bethel Baptist Church minutes for 1875 recorded the names of twenty one men who were assigned as a begging committee to raise money to pay for the new church building. Christopher's name and the names of two of his brothers and two of his brother-in-laws were among those names of church members on that list. Christoper died on February 20, 1916 in the home of his son "Webb" Nettles in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. One of Christopher's obituary states that he was buried on the Nettles family farm in the family cemetery in error he was buried in unmarked grave at the Oakland Cemetery in Hampton on February 21, 1916.
