Charles "Chuck" E. Schamens, age 83, of Watertown, South Dakota, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Jenkins Living Center. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, with Pastor Paul Janke officiating. Sharon Renner will be the soloist accompanied by Rachel Wendler.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., on Tuesday at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown, and will continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown, SD.

Military Honors will be conducted by Marine Corps League Kampeska NE Det. 1079 of Watertown, Marine Corps Military Funeral Honors Team of Wahpeton, ND, Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion and Frank H. Adams Post 750 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Watertown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Chuck's memory to LifeSource or Prairie Lakes Hospice.

Honorary Groups will be Marine Corps League, Past Law Enforcement Colleagues and members of the former Golden Age Club.

Active Pallbearers will be Nicholas Schamens, Brett Schamens, Seth Schamens, Jonathan Schamens, Johnny Rider and Nate McKenzie.

Charles Eugene Schamens, the son of Orlin and Abbie (Janssen) Schamens, was born on April 3, 1934 in Bryant, South Dakota. He went to school for one year in Henry, SD and attended his junior and senior years in Hazel, graduating from Hazel High School. Following his graduation, Chuck served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957.

Chuck married Phyllis Howey on July 20, 1958 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Watertown and they raised four children, Scott, Brent, Peggy and Kirk. Chuck worked at various jobs in Watertown as a milkman, worked for John Deer, Tempo and also worked for Billy Williams. He joined the Watertown Police Department and was employed from 1961-1983. He was Sheriff of Codington County from 1983-1991 and then was Director of DCI in Pierre from 1991 until his retirement in 1996. In 1998, Chuck had a heart transplant.

He was an active member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church and church council. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, Lions Club and Golden Age Club.

Chuck enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, carpentry work, wood working, reading and traveling.

Chuck is survived by his children, Scott (Marjorie) Schamens and Brent (Pam) Schamens all of Watertown, Peggy (Ken) Morse of Monroe, WA and Kirk (Trudy) Schamens of Watertown; one sister, Evelyn Moeller of Watertown; three sisters-in-law, Dorine Schamens of St. George, UT, Doris Schamens of Watertown and Virginia Schamens of Hastings, NE; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis on September 19, 2009; three brothers, Orville, Albert and James Schamens; and four sisters, Ada Hanson, Alice Moeller, Ethel Sondergard and Jean Parrot.
