Ethel (Schamens) Sondergaard was born June 6, 1921 at home in Bryant, South Dakota, the daughter of Orlin and Abbie (Janssen) Schamens. She spent her early years in Bryant and received her education in the rural schools of Hamlin County. After her schooling, Ethel worked keeping house and babysitting.

On October 28, 1940, at the age of 19, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Sondergaard in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The couple moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin until Lloyd was drafted into the army in 1944. Ethel then returned to her hometown where Lloyd rejoined her in 1946.

In 1950, they moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota where Ethel was employed by the Dell Rapids Hospital. She worked both as a cook and then as the head of the laundry department until her retirement in 1986. Ethel was a member of both the Dell Rapids Lutheran and Willow Creek Lutheran Churches. Her personal time was spent raising their three children, working in a huge garden, and creating beautiful ceramics which she lovingly gave to family and friends. She also enjoyed picnics and fishing with her family. Ethel was a wonderful cook and eagerly looked forward to having company, often serving the fish they had caught.

After retirement, Ethel and Lloyd sold their home and moved to Estelline, South Dakota to be closer to Ethel's family. In Estelline, they were active members of the United Church of Christ and the Senior Citizens Center where she was in charge of making the coffee every week. Here, they made many friends with whom Ethel shared her love for playing cards both at the center and in their home.

In 2002, due to health problems, they moved into Orchard Hills, a congregate living center in Dell Rapids. Although Lloyd had to relocate to a nursing home shortly after their move, Ethel continued to reside at Orchard Hills for three years. There, she was able to pursue her zeal for card playing by teaching many of the other residents various games. Her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren who lived nearby, were also targets for her card playing passion. Ethel also enjoyed spending time making crafts and holiday decorations.

In October 2005, Ethel joined her husband at Terrace Manor Nursing Home where they celebrated their 65th anniversary together that same month. Ethel was active in all of the activities at the nursing home and enjoyed the company of many new friends as well as family. She went home to be with her Lord on September 27, 2007.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Delores Woodbury and her husband Albert of Roseburg, OR, Larry Sondergaard and his wife Doris of Apache Junction, AZ, Raymon Sondergaard and his wife Bonnie of Dell Rapids, SD; ten grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; three brothers, Orvil Schamens and his wife Dorine of Washington City, UT, Albert Schamens and his wife Doris of Hazel, SD, Charles Schamens and his wife Phyllis of Watertown, SD; three sisters, Ada Hanson and Evelyn Moeller, both of Canby, OR, and Jean Parrett of Portland, OR; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd on January 25, 2007, one granddaughter, Danita Johnson, her parents, one brother Jimmy Schamens, and her sister and brother-in-law, Floyd and Alice Moeller.

Memorial services for friends and family will be celebrated at Terrace Manor Nursing Home in Dell Rapids on Sunday, October 7, 2007. Pastors Raymon and Bonnie Sondergaard of Church On The Rock will officiate. Inurnment of Ethel's remains will be at the Bryant German Cemetery at a later date.
