Violet Thomas

Violet Elizabeth Thomas, 83, Centralia, died Sunday, January 17, 1988, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.
She was born in Centralia on May 24, 1904, to Dr. W.S. and Flossie Domer Shoemaker. Violet attended schools in Centralia and graduated in 1921. She then attended the University of Kansas, earning both a bachelor's degree of arts and a masters of arts degree. She had been a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Lambda Theta, Sigma X, and Kappa Phi. After graduation she taught college mathematics in Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa.

Violet was united in marriage to Wilson Thomas of Cameron, Mo. in 1932. They had one son, Philip, who died in infancy.

She continued teaching, finishing 25 years by teaching GI's at Illinois Institute of Technology.

After her husband, Col. Thomas, retired from his duty in World War II, they moved to Brookfield, Ill., and lived there until the Colonel died. Violet returned to Centralia in 1980.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Wava Allen of Centralia, and Hazel Newlin of Horton.

Memorial services were conducted by Rev. Warren Hett on Wednesday, January 20, at the United Methodist Church in Centralia. Mrs. Lola Warren was organist, and Eileen Young and Lela Campfield were vocalists.
Mrs. Thomas was cremated. Inurnment will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Northlake, Ill.
Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home in Centralia was in charge of arrangements.
