Simon was the brother of four Confederate soldiers: Aaron and Joseph were both killed in Franklin, Tennessee during the strife against Union forces (1864).
William and Thomas J. were both captured on November 30th of the same year, but were released a short time later, upon promising not to participate in any additional fighting against Union troops.

Simon was the husband of Alice O. (Denty) Dean. They were married November 27, 1877. They had one child, William.
After Simon passed away in 1881. Some stories state that Simon had been involved in an altercation with another gentleman and shot the man in a fit of rage. Thinking he had murdered the individual, he fled to Arkansas and in remorse, committed suicide. Sadly, the other gentleman had not perished from his injuries, but Simon had no way of knowing this.
After his death, Alice married his older brother William H. Dean.
