Enlisted on March 27, 1862 at Horn Lake, Mississippi into Co. A. 10th Mississippi Infantry. Promoted to Cpl. December 1, 1862 and to Sgt. September, 1863.He was mentioned in his Regimental Commander's Official Report for the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia as displaying "Conspicuous Bravery". On February 24, 1864 he received a 40 day furlough. In May, 1864 he war promoted to Lieutenant. His three brothers were also in this battle, Aaron Dean, mortally wounded and died at home on December 15, 1864, Thomas J. wounded and captured in a Franklin Confederate Hospital in December along with William H. Dean who was also wounded and captured.
