From 1936 - 1940, he worked for the University of Tennessee in chemical environmental engineering research. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Public Health Corps. Mr. Hammond also served as Chief of Industrial Hygiene for the state of South Carolina before moving to Houston in 1947 to work as an Industrial Hygienist and Sanitary Engineer for Humble Oil. He served as director of Industrial Hygiene for Humble Oil and Exxon, U.S.A. from 1961 - 1978 and was a professor of Industrial Hygiene at the University of Texas School of Public Health, 1979 - 1988.
Mr. Hammond belonged to many professional organizations and served as chairman or director of many of these. In 1982, he received the Henry F. Smyth Award from the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene. He was involved in many civic activities, among them, Mayor of West University, 1957 - 1958, and director of the Houston Poison Center. A lifelong member of the Baptist Church, serving many years as a deacon and very active member. In 1994, he was chosen as Alumnus of the Year by Mississippi State College of Arts & Sciences.
Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Mary Alice Jobe Hammond and the late Mary Louise Baird Hammond.
Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2003 from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. at The Settegast-Kopf Co. Funeral Directors. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at River Oaks Baptist Church, 2300 Willowick, with Rev. Martus Miley officiating. Interment will follow in Winona, Mississippi. Pallbearers will be Dr. E.D. Hodo, Eugene Barbles, Martin Barrie, Robert Ellis, Ron Barner, and James Hammond, III. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to River Oaks Baptist Church, 2300 Willowick, Houston, Texas 77027, or to the charity of your choice.
