Edward Arnold Hammond, Sr.

Edward Arnold Hammond, Sr., 82, retired Winona businessman and civic leader, died Saturday morning, Aug. l, 1987, at his residence.

The 1928 graduate of Mississippi College was past president of the Winona Rotary Club, past member of the Winona city school board, former alderman for the city of Winona, past president of the Mississippi Wholesale Grocer's Association, a lifetime deacon at First Baptist Church of Winona and a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Winona.

Hammond and family owned and operated Hammond Wholesale, a grocery wholesaler which served much of central Mississippi.

Memorial services were conducted from First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. The Rev. Dr. Jerry Mixon preached. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Hellen Hammond of Winona, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Hellen Pugh of Halls, Tenn., a son Ed Hammond of Winona, two sisters, Mrs. Louise Johnson of Winona and Mrs. Katerine Blanton of Kosciusko, four brothers, Frank Hammond and Abner Hammond, both of Marks, Robert Hammond of Winona and James Hammond of Houston, Texas, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Aubrey Boone, Charles Hamer, Gene Kemp, John Thompson, Charles Billingsley, Powell Golding, Robert White and Barksdale Garner. Lee Funeral Home handled arrangements.
