Margaret Henrietta (Brown) McQueen was born in the World War I era on July 26th, 1922, in the very small town of Linby, Iowa (”corn country”). She was raised on a farm by her parents, Alonzo Verl Brown and Maggie Linder Brown. Margaret lived to the age of 98 and was predeceased by all of her siblings.

She and her five brothers (Harold, Bruce, James, Chester, Tom) and two sisters (Mary and Flossie) lived in a big two story farmhouse. She learned to milk cows at an early age and her farm duties grew, as her brothers went off to war and her sisters married. She helped her father work on the land with two horses and a plow.

After a year of college, Margaret taught school for a year in a one room schoolhouse. She was introduced to a young man, George Austin McQueen. When George went off to war, she corresponded with him. After spending four years in the Army Air Corps, (South Pacific), he returned to Iowa and was more than ready to settle down. He renewed his courtship with Margaret, and they were soon engaged.

Margaret and George were married February 10, 1946. While still living in Iowa, they had two children: Evelyn Ann (McQueen) Brandish and Verl “Mac” George McQueen. The family moved to San Diego, CA in 1949, to find work, near George’s brother (Jim McQueen). Margaret and George were married for 56 years before his passing.

Margaret had seven grandchildren, Margaret (Brandish) Lowe, Tom Brandish, Tim Brandish, Scott McQueen, Nicole (McQueen) Salmeri, Jared McQueen and Joshua McQueen, and ten great-grandchildren, Michael Lowe, Ryan Brandish, Andrew Brandish, Ashley Brandish, Maija Brandish, Riley McQueen, Emily Kearney, Brooke Kearney, Marilyn McQueen, and Macy Joy McQueen. She was reverently known amongst all of her grandchildren as “taco grandma” because of her famous yummy fried tacos.

Margaret was a loving and caring woman. Her life was truly centered around her family, her church and her God. She enjoyed worshiping for many years at the PB Christian Church where her memorial will be held outside in the prayer garden on Sunday, September 6th at 5:30pm.
