Abram Spaide Jr. went into the Lord's care on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, after a long, hard battle with cancer. Abe was bedridden for the last three weeks due to his illness and died at home.
He was born Jan. 19, 1928, a son of the late Abram Sr. and Emma (Smith) Spaide.
His daughter, Judy Ann Spaide, preceded him in death in 1950. Four brothers, Wilbur, Howard, Fred and infant Clarence Spaide, and a sister, Beldene Pendelton, also died previously.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Leona (Silver) Spaide; daughter: Mary Ann and husband Strate Marinakos; son: Richard and wife Marie Spaide; daughter: Donna and husband Chris Gearhart; son: James and wife Sue Spaide. All of Abe's children are from Nescopeck.
Also surviving are grandchildren: Nikitas Marinakos, Jared and Tamara Spaide, Ashley Robbins, Aaron, Nathan and Garrett Gearhart, Cody and Brittany Spaide; and great-granddaughter, Macy Gearhart. Surviving are two sisters: Olive Ruckle of Berwick, and Noreen Graver of Lancaster, and one brother, Leonard Spaide of Berwick.
Abe is a member of First United Church of Christ in Nescopeck, where he served as elder and deacon for many years. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company No. 1; past president of Nescopeck Ambulance, and served as a board member. He also served on Nescopeck Council for many years and was a former mayor of Nescopeck. He was a member of American Legion of Bloomsburg.
Abe served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Medical Corps.
He worked at AC&F of Berwick, then Berwick Forge and Fabricating. He drove truck for Highway Trailers and retired from PPL of Berwick.
Abe enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and camping.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Heller's Funeral Home, Third Street, Nescopeck, with the Rev. Richard Dennison, his pastor, presiding. Calling hours are 9-11 a.m. Wednesday.
He will be laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
The family will provide flowers. Contributions can be made in his memory to First United Church of Christ, Third and Schley streets, Nescopeck, PA 18635.
