"Citizens of both Meade and Fowler joined in paying their last tribute of respects to a departed citizen and friend, at the M. E. Church in Meade on Monday afternoon of this week and the large number in attendance was proof that Mr. Samuel Bennett was held in the highest as a citizen, a neighbor and a friend.
Having come to Kansas from Indiana in 1887, he may justly be called one of the pioneers of Meade County, and in his passing another link in that chain of early settlers, to credit the success of this county belongs, is broken, and one who was ever ready to help, has gone to his reward.
Samuel M. Bennett was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, near LaFayette, on September 125th, 1838. On August ?, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Morris, at LaFayette, Indiana. To this union five children were born, two sons and three daughters. In 1887 he heard "The Call of The West" and came to Meade County, locating in Fowler. During the next few years, the family resided in several places in the vicinity of Fowler, moving to the present home, about half-way between Meade and Fowler, twenty-five years ago, where he has since made his home. Her he took an active part in every undertaking having for its object the betterment of his community. In the church, the school. and the social life of Lakeview, he played a prominent part. His influence in these issues in Meade and Fowler were also felt, and both cities claimed his as their own. About three years ago Mr. Bennett's health failed, and he was compelled to give up his duties about the farm as well as much of his work in the community, but his influence still continued to be a guide. Several days ago, a change for the worse was noted and on August 11th he received the Final Summons.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church, in this city, on Monday afternoon. Rev. A. E. Ayers, formerly pastor of the church at Fowler and Rev. W. J. Van Cleve, the present pastor, had charge. A short service was held at the home, before the remains were brought to Meade. The members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, of Fowler, of which he was a member acted as pall-bearers and as escort, and had charge of the services at the grave, in Graceland Cemetery.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Bennett, three daughters, Mrs. A. B. Russell, of Brookstone, Indiana, Mrs. W. A. Harris, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Ross Drennen, of this place. One son, Clarence, died when but a small child; and Frank, about eight years ago. Two grand-children, Lemuel and Mary Bennett of Meade also survive."

Observatons by Frank Fuhr (Newspaper Editor)

"We shall all miss good old Father Samuel M. Bennett, notwithstanding the fact that during the past few years we have seldom seen him on our streets as we did in the years that have passed and gone. His was an active and valuable life. The writer looks back over the vista of thirty years and sees our good friend and fellow citizen engaged in farming, politics and insurance, always straight forward, honest and honorable in all his work. All those four score and nearly five years were days of usefulness and good will to men. He always dared to do right and his life was a source of inspiration to all those with whom he associated. The world will never permit such men as Father Bennett to die."
