Jesse's obit states that his parents, James and Ruth (Whitehead) Bennett were natives of Ohio. Actually they were natives of New Jersey, James being born in Cape May County. James was previously married to Deborah Goff and Mary Steelman, both dying in New Jersey. He then married Ruth Whitehead, daughter of James and Sarah Wood Whitehead and moved to Indiana, bringing James' children John (son of Deborah Goff) and Anthony (son of Mary Steelman). James also had a daughter Deborah Goff Bennett with Deborah Goff but it is unknown if she travelled with them. En route to Indiana, they lived in Ohio in 1835 but by 1836 were in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

James and Ruth Whitehead Bennett had four children: Aaron S., Samuel M., Jesse W. and Julia (aka Gula) Elma (Buhl - obit says Ruel).

Obit:

Jesse W. Bennett, residing a mile and a quarter west of Nevada, died Saturday night at 12:10 o'clock, his death being the result of bladder trouble. He had been ill for two years and during the greater portion of that time was confined to his home. The past three weeks his condition was critical. the deceased was the son of James and Ruth Whitehead Bennett, being born in Tippecanoe county on September 3, 1842. His parents were natives of Ohio, moving to Tippecanoe county soon after their marriage. They reared a large family, but two of the members surviving; they being Samuel Bennett and Mrs. George Ruel, the latter living at Moscow, Kansas, and the other living at Meade. Jesse W. Bennett and Mary Cresse were married at Lafayette, November 6, 1873, going to housekeeping on a farm in Benton county, and later Mr. Bennett acquired the farm of more than 200 acres. Later this farm was sold and December 20, 1900, they moved to Tipton county, Mr. Bennett buying the farm of 200 acres near Nevada, this farm since having been divided among the children with the exception of 80 acres which Mr. Bennett retained. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, a daughter dying in infancy. Those surviving are Merton Bennett, who resides on a farm opposite the parental home, Wilson Bennett, a student at Taylor University, and Mrs. Jesse Williams at the home place. The wife and four grandchildren also survive. Mr. Bennett had been a member of the M.E. church since he was seventeen years of age and he was a most worth citizen. The burial will take place Tuesday, the services being at the M.E. church at Nevada at 10:30 o'clock. The burial will be in Sharpsville.
