Visitation for Philip Glatz 85, of Mundelein is 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday 4/30 at Kristan Funeral Home, 219 West Maple Ave., Mundelein. Funeral Mass 9:30 a.m. Monday 5/1 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Mundelein. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Mundelein. Philip was born February 28, 1938, to Gertrude and Louis Glatz in Henry, IL. and died peacefully on Saturday April 22, 2023, surrounded by his family.

He was born and raised in Henry, IL. and was its marble champion. He moved to Libertyville when he was 10 years old. He was tennis champion for two years running at Libertyville High School.

He was a math teacher for his entire career and retired from Libertyville High School. He was voted Hot Dog Teacher of the Year in 1979. For many years, he loved collecting and studying antiques. There was no dish or knick-knack around that he did not flip over and share its identity and its value.

Winchester House residents cherished his regular visits and flowers from his garden. Way back when, he would often bring his children on those visits after Mass on Sundays. Phil was a life-long gardener of flowers, vegetables and, later, of fruit trees. A favorite pastime was going for slow drives through Saint Mary of the Lake seminary looking for deer or baby raccoons. He put the COMPETE in anything competitive, such as chess, spades, tennis, ping pong, horseshoes, bowling and playing HORSE.

He enjoyed organizing and participating in prayer groups, including at Winchester House, family holy hour with the rosary at the Benedictine Convent (later Marytown) and with friends and neighbors. He liked leading the May crowning of Blessed Mother at Saint Mary of the Lake seminary. He loved praying in front of abortion clinics and talking to mothers about keeping their children and when they did, celebrating births and birthdays with their families.

Running into former students in town brought him great joy. He taught religious education at Santa Maria del Popolo as well and loved getting the children ready for and attending their First Communion with them. He loved making really strong, long-lasting rosaries for the children and his family.

But most of all, he was proud of being a father of seven children, twenty-two grandchildren and one great-grandson. Dad's lesson for his family was to know the Faith and live it in everything. It sustained him through all that life threw his way.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary Town 1600 W. Park Ave. Libertyville, Il. 60048
