Charles Raybern Hill Jr., 79, of Leavenworth, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. He was known as Charlie to most, still called Buddy by family and old friends, but his favorite people called him Dad and Papa.
He was born Jan. 7, 1944, the oldest son of Charles Raybern Sr. and Alice Mae (Berry) Hill. He spent the first two years of his life in Dearborn, Mo., until the family moved across the river to Leavenworth, where he remained the rest of his life.
Charlie graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1962 and spent several years as a cabinet maker at Kaaz Woodworking. In 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, Charlie was drafted into the Army where he spent the next two years serving Uncle Sam, including a tour in Vietnam as part of the 101st Airborne Division from June 1968 to 1969. Although this was not the path he had chosen, he was always immensely proud of his service to his country. When his tour in Vietnam was over, he returned to Ft. Leavenworth to finish up his Army commitment.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Charlie went to work for Leavenworth National Bank as a Collections Officer, moving to Installment Loans and eventually Senior Vice President of Commercial Loans, during which time he received his Degree from the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He survived the banking turmoil of the late 70's, the reorganization of the bank into Mid-American Bank in the 80's and finally the acquisition of the bank by Country Club Bank in 1991. Through it all he achieved what was always his most important objective-taking care of his customers. He retired in October 2017, but remained with the bank as a member of the Board of Directors, finishing his 52-year career with the bank in 2022.
In June of 1976, Charlie married Karen Domann, and she survives at their home in Leavenworth. Together they raised two sons, Trey (Charles Raybern III) and Adam. He is survived by Trey and wife Angela of Kansas City, Missouri, and Adam and wife Jennifer of Olathe, Kansas. Charlie is also survived by seven grandchildren, of whom he was tremendously proud, Victoria, Aaron, Olivia and Nicholas, all of Kansas City, Mo., and Ryan, Lila and Charlotte all of Olathe, Kan, a daughter-in-law, Janine Hill of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Ray and wife, Debbie, and Tom, and wife Lena all of Leavenworth; his Domann brothers and sisters-in-law; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Charlie was welcomed to his heavenly home by his parents; his parents-in-law, Ray and Marge Domann; two sisters and their spouses, Barbara and Kenny Zink and Kay and Roger Michaud; two brothers-in-law, Russ McAfee and Bill Coppinger; a sister-in-law, Sue Domann; and several nephews. There surely were hugs all around and maybe a beer or two when he arrived!
We will miss him more than words can say and look forward to the day we will all be together again.
