Alta Mae Ramer was the only known child of Civil War Veteran Anthony Ramer (1842-1904) and Lucinda Jane Shoop Ramer (1855-1943), who married 15 Jan 1874 at Pierce Township, De Kalb County, Illinois.

Alta's grave-marker says born 1881, but 1880 is believed to be correct. Alta married the English immigrant Herbert (went by Herb) Walter Baker (1882-1967) on 30 Aug 1911 at Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. Alta and Herb had all six of their children at Hinckley, De Kalb County, Illinois. The Bakers moved from Illinois to Alsea, Benton County, Oregon in the summer of 1930. After spending a time there they moved to Escondido, San Diego County, California for a period. They then moved back to De Kalb County, Illinois but tired of the cold winters, and moved to Alsea again. They moved to Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon in 1940. They had two girls and four boys. All four sons served in World War II. The children were namely:

1. Herbert Ramer (Ramer or Bill) Baker (1912-1991)
2. Mary Lucinda Baker Carlson (1913-1998)
3. Ralph Elmer Baker (1915-1947)
4. John Anthony Baker (1918-2009)
5. Joe Ensign Baker (1919-1998)
6. Betty Jane Baker Stevenson (1924-2014)
