Harvey Hockett of Codell died Sunday morning [February 25, 1912] at about one o’clock of heart failure. He had been to Stockton Friday as a witness in the Faris [murder] trial. Saturday he accompanied Z.E. Smith of Corning Township home. He phoned in for his son-in-law to come out after him.

He arrived at Codell at about 5 o’clock and was feeling fine. Mrs. Hockett had been staying with their daughter Mrs. John Rolfe while he was at Stockton so they decided to remain there for the night. After supper Mr. Hockett went over to Dr. Littlejohn’s to see one of the latter’s little boys who was quite sick. Returning to Mrs. Rolfe’s [he] went to bed at about 9 p.m. Near midnight he made a little noise and Mrs. Hockett tried to awaken him but could not. She went for her son-in-law to help awaken him but Harve had passed away.

Harvey Hockett was born December 21, 1851, in Henry County, Iowa. July 3, 1872, was married to Emma Smith. Moved in 1876 to Tama County, Iowa.

He came to Rooks County, Kansas, with his father Amos Hockett in October, 1878, homesteading in Corning Township. With the exceptions of three or four years sojourn at Hebron, Nebraska, and one as manager of the co-operative store at Plainville [he] lived continuously in Codell vicinity. Nine years ago he moved to Codell and engaged in mercantile business. Several years ago he sold to Mr. Gilpin.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hockett. Guy, Amos, and Penn live near Codell. Their daughters, Mrs. H. Carey, Hebron, Nebraska; Mrs. Everett McFadden of Natoma; and Mrs. John Rolfe of Codell. One child died in infancy while they lived in Nebraska.

He has four brothers and four sisters living. Brothers Nathan Hockett of Iowa. Evan of Gray County. Will of Codell. Link of Codell. Four sisters, Mrs. Sam Frazier of Codell, Mrs. Owen Smith of Laton, Mrs. Mendenhall of Texas, and one in Henry County, Iowa.

Was a member of the Mt. Ayr Friends Quarterly Conference. Took an active part in building the new M.E. Church at Codell. Was a member of the I.O.O.F.

Harvey Hockett was one of the noblest characters Rooks County has produced. In case of sickness and need he was ever ready to respond. The way he spent his last evening was typical of his life. Was public spirited and generous to a fault.
