OBITUARY, The Anthon Herald, 25 November 1953, page 3:

George F. Coon was born the son of George W. Coon and Ella R. Coon October 6, 1875, at Correctionville. At the age of ten years his family moved to a farm near Buffalo, Missouri, where he completed his elementary and high school education. During these years he developed a love for the outdoors and spent much of the time hunting and fishing and became an expert marksman.

In 1896 his family moved back to Iowa and settled on a farm near Correctionville. Five years later, on May 18, 1901, he was united in marriage with Minnie Hatfield at Ida Grove. Their household had its beginning on a farm near Correctionville where they resided until 1930.

After retiring from the farm, they owned and operated an apartment house in Sioux City until about ten years ago when Mr. Coon's health began to fail, so he retired from that endeavor.

During these last years he has undergone surgery for a goiter and had cataracts removed from both eyes. About a week ago he was taken suddenly ill and was rushed to the hospital. Late that night he underwent emergency surgery. At 9:30 a.m., November 10, 1953, he passed away at the age of 78.

Left to mourn his passing include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Ed Schulke of Correctionville; three sons, Kenneth R. and Wayne W. of Sioux City and Darwin B. of Omaha; sisters, Erma Coleman of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Cora Queener of Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Maude Page of Hinton, Mrs. Bertha Anderson of Correctionville, and Verna Coon of Anthon; brothers William of Hinton and Edward of Sioux City; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Wilson-Hull Funeral Home in Correctionville, Iowa, with Russel G. Rogers, pastor of the Morningside Church of Christ at Sioux City, officiating. Burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery. Mr. Coon was a member of the Church of Christ in Morningside.
