Donald Louis Bruce Sr., 86, of Fairlawn, VA, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Pulaski County, VA, on March 27, 1922, to the late Dick & Maggie Linkous Bruce, and is also preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra B. Moss; and three brothers, Giggs, Cecil, and Garnett Bruce. He was veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Mississippi and the U.S.S. Raton submarines. He was a member of the Radford VFW. He was a longtime member of Fairlawn Church of God, where he served as a Trustee and Head Usher for many years. Donald retired from the Lynchburg Foundry with 38 years of service, and was a charter member of the Fairlawn Lions Club where he held many offices. He was an avid Virginia Tech Football Fan. Donald is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 65 years, Gerlean Giles Bruce, of Fairlawn; two sons, Donald Bruce Jr., of Norwood, NC, and Roger D. Bruce, of Belsprings, VA; one brother, Ralph Bruce, of Richmond; loving niece, Brenda Gilbert; special friend, Betty Greene; and caregiver, Doug Franklin. Funeral services will be held noon on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in the Fairlawn Church of God with the Rev. Terry Bowden and the Rev. Marcus Harrison officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Fairlawn Church of God, 7858 Peppers Ferry Blvd., Fairlawn, VA 24141. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday prior to the service at the Fairlawn Church of God.
