Mr. Alonzo Burnam McCollum, age 85 died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at his home following a short, but courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Scaffold Cane in Rockcastle County, KY on Feb. 8, 1923 the son of Rollie Burnam and Addie Sims McCollum. On June 4, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Abney.

He was a member of the Roundstone Baptist Church where, along with his wife, were baptized in 1962. There, he served as deacon for many years, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. He was retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot and was a WWII Army veteran where he served in the 303rd Infantry. During his service, he received numerous medals and citations including the American Theater Ribbon, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He also received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Rifle Sharpshooter, and Carbine Expert. He was a member of the VFW, the Civil Air Patrol, the Republican Presidential Task Force, and the American Rifle Association. He served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader and was the past Rockcastle County Republican Chairman. He was also a 911 Board Member and a Board Member for the Brindle Ridge Fire Department. He was known by his friends as "Lonnie".

Mr. McCollum is survived by two daughters, Gail McCollum and Dianne McCollum, both of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Frank McCollum (Geri) of Tennessee; and three sisters, Joy Pingleton (Charlie) of Berea, Sandra McCollum of Minnesota, and Nina Abbott (Fred) of Indiana. Also surviving are long-time family friends, Dorothea Vanderwerf and Joshua Lopez; and several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Louise Abney McCollum; three brothers, Edward, Ellis, and George McCollum; and four sisters, Janie Durham, Eleanor Bennett, Phamy Amen, and Mildred Parsons.
