William James West was born to Jabez and Nancy (Snider) West. It is believed he was born in Jefferson County, New York or Portland, Rideau Lakes township, Leeds & Granville Co, Ontario. His mother wasn't sure which side of the border they were living on when he was born. When he was about eight years old, the family moved to Amery, Wisconsin, where he went to school.
