Francis Edgar West was born February 23, 1901 in Hamlin County, South Dakota to William and Grace (Prouty). He was the first child to be born in South Dakota (Dixon Township, Hamlin County) at his Uncle Frank's place. He was shorter and dark haired like his Dad. He farmed on the home place for several years.
He married Annie Marie Yonker. They had five children, all born in Hamlin County: Betty Jane, Rose Marie, Robert Dean, Duane Francis, and Ruby Ann. Sometime during WWII they moved to Watertown, South Dakota, where the children grew up and attended school. Francis worked for the Watertown Park and Recreation Department as a groundskeeper. Annie worked as a housekeeper.
Francis was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church, where he was a board member since 1965.
