January 2, 1941--George M. Davis, 81, died Sunday. He built in 50 years, a general store into a $250,000 annual volume. His unique merchandising method in a village of 300, coupled with an ability to turn obstacles into stepping stones brought the elderly storekeeper into national prominence. The Rock Glen store opened in 1888, when the Wyoming County village boasted a population of 1,000 people, supported by a salt plant, a stone quarry with large payrolls. Hard times closed both of them, but Davis's store continued to prosper. A son, Edward and a daughter, Marquerite took control after his retirement. He is survived by three other sons, Dr. George of Arcade, Rev. Harold of Port Huron, Mi., Alvah Davis of Fargo, N.D.; one brother, Charles Davis of San Franciso, Calif., one sister, Mrs. Carla Kennedy of Alburquerque, N.M. Burial in Maple Grove, Gainesville.
