Robert Fitzhugh Lee was the son of Edwin James Lee and Sarah Virginia Lee. He was the youngest child in a family of 11 children in Bedford Springs, Virginia.

"Fitz" (as he was called by family and friends) graduated with the class of 1914 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (University) in Blacksburg, Virginia. He worked as an agricultural agent for the Commonwealth of Virginia to help farmers improve and modernize methods of caring for livestock and growing crops. He also worked as a farmer and skilled carpenter for most of his life.

He married Harriet Elizabeth Smoot on April 16th, 1916 in Mitchells Presbyterian Church (in Mitchells, Virginia). They were the parents of eleven children starting their family in Mitchells, Virginia and moved to Fauquier County in the 1930s.

He married Alice Gordon Britland on July 14th, 1950, in Alexandria, Virginia.
