"THE SUICIDE OF CHARLES ABELS"
Despondent Ship Caulker Took His Life Last Night-Leaves Infant Son
A shock was felt this morning when it was learned that Charles Abels, a ship-caulker at the Brander shipyard and box factory, had comitted suicide last night with poison, said to be bichloride. Dr. Welch reached the unfortunate man before he expired and did everything in his power to stem the fast-ebbing tide, but the influence of the deadly drug had extended too far for human aid. The body has been embalmed and will be buried at some hour tomorrow not yet determined, and Rev. Ellis will officiate at the funeral, interment taking place in the Biloxi cemetery.
The deceased had been suffering with mumps and other complications, and it is thought that this, together with the sorrow caused by the deathof his wife last fall from influenza shortly after their only child was born, weighted heavily upon him. The little six-months old child has been living with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Abels, residing at the corner of Maxwell alley and Fayard street where the unfortunate accident occurred.
