John was the son of Jessie and Hannah Self Ledford. He mustered into Company C, 10th N.C. State Troops on Aug. 15, 1862 along with his brother, Thomas, in Camp Hill, NC. Thomas died of disease on Aug. 9, 1864 in Petersburg, VA.

He married Margaret Newton, the daughter of John Oliver Newton and his wife, Catherine Swofford.

***NOTE: He served in the Company C, 10th N.C. State Troops also known as 1st Regiment NC Artillery (Charlotte Artillery). He was NOT Infantry as the marker states.
