Charles H Bassett was born at Ossian, New York March 14, 1828. At age fifteen he was a school teacher. At seventeen he went with his family to Nauvoo. He participated in the battle of Nauvoo. After the saints were driven west he lived with his family in Council Bluffs. He emigrated to Utah in 1852, and resided in Salt Lake City. On September 1, 1855, Elder Bassett returned from serving a church mission to the States with Erastus Snow as his companion. He owned a merchandising store in Salt Lake City. He practiced plural marriage and had five wives and a very large family. During the latter part of his life he acted as confidential clerk for a number of businesses, and the last position held by him was that of bookkeeper at the LDS Bishop's General Storehouse.
His death occured on Tuesday, Feb 26, 1907, the cause being old age. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 1st, in the 2nd Ward Chapel. Eulogistic remarks were made by President Joseph F. Smith, and Elders Willard Done, Joseph Keddington and Bishop Heber C Iverson. The grave at the cemetery was dedicated by Bishop James Jensen.
