James married Lula Effanora Needham on 4 Aug 1904 in Wells Springs, Campbell County, Tennessee. They were the parents of 5 children.
The family lived in New York for a time before moving back to Tennessee. They then moved to St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1910's.
James worked as an operator for Public Service Company.
In May of 1963, he suffered a coronary thrombosis. He was hospitalized in June at DePaul Hospital for the final 3 days of his life.
At the time of his death, James was 82 years, 10 months and 25 days old. He was buried next to his wife, Lula, who passed away in 1954.
Shepard Funeral Chapel in northwest St. Louis County was in charge of arrangements.
Children: 2 daughters, 3 sons.
