W.C. Leberman, who came here 65 years ago, when Olney was a handful of houses on the grassy northwest Texas plains and the great cattle herds were moving north past the Territory to Kansas railheads, died last Sunday.
The pioneer livestock farmer, 84 years old, "Uncle Bill" to his Young County friends and to three generations of youngsters, died at the farm a mile south of Olney where he had lived since 1896. There January 19, 1946, he and his wife had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Funeral services were held at the Olney First Christian church with Rev. Lloyd Allen, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Olney New cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home.
Leberman had retired from active farming in 1932. He was a boy 13 years old when his family decided to move to Texas, and made the long trip southwest by wagon. In 1875, he reached the then bustling frontier town of Fort Worth and made their home there. In 1882 Leberman moved to Young County and settled south of Olney, in the same community where he passed the remainder of his life. He was a charter member of the W.O.W. Lodge at Orth.
William Leberman married Georgie Gibbs on 18 January 1895 in Young County.
Survivors: his widow; one son - W.C. Leberman, Jr.; 2 daughters - Mrs. W.C. Wainwright and Mrs. R.E. Pharries; 2 brothers - Dix Leberman, George Leberman; 1 sister - Mrs. W.F. Keathley; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.
