Louis Canfield Russell was born April 11, 1881 in Iowa to David Russell and Clara Canfield. He married Catherine O. Ferguson in November of 1908 in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa. Ten known children were born to them, Carl, Paul, Glen, Judd, Clara, Kathryn, Davy, Jacqueline, Earl, and Boyd. He died February 22, 1952 in Julesburg, Colorado and is buried in the Ovid Reservation Cemetery in Sedgwick County, Colorado.
