"Brown County native Bernis "Bernie" Abbott died Saturday, March 23, 1996, in Indianapolis. A resident of that city, he was 69. Mr. Abbott was born July 12, 1926, in Brown County to Charles and Gertrude Rittenhouse Abbott. He was married to Ernestine Leach. She survives in Indianapolis. Mr. Abbott had worked as a watchmaker at Rost Jewelers in Indianapolis for 45 years, retiring in 1988. He had previously worked for Diamond Chain and also had been self-employed at Abbott Watch Repair.
He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Abbott was a member of the Atkins Saw American Legion Post. Other survivors include two sons, David "Dave" Abbott of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and Rick Abbot of Packs River, Maryland; two daughters, Cheryl Shelton of Indianapolis and Debbie Smith of Logansport; two brothers, Jack Abbott of Elwood and Morris Abbott of Indianapolis; and seven grandchildren.
A service was conducted Tuesday, March 26, at the Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home in Indianapolis. Burial was in Johnson County's Forest Lawn Memory Gardens."
