David was born in Trenton, New Jersey, to Polish immigrants Thomas Piotrowski and Anna Funk. In 1916 he enlisted in the US Army and he saw action in France during World War I. In 1918 he was mustard gassed. After the war ended he was assigned to Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, and after his discharge he remained in Louisville. On a walking tour he met and later married Mary Catherine Pape. The couple had 11 children: Rosie, twin boys who died at birth, Bob, Larry, Ruth Louise, Marilyn, Dorothy, Francie, Ruth Marie and Margaret. David suffered with tuberculosis and it was that ailment that finally took his life in December, 1948.

N.B.: Although David's grave marker is engraved with 22 Jul 1894 as his birthday it is believed that his actual birthday was 22 Jul 1893. This is actually the date that he swore to on his US Army enlistment papers for World War I. Other family records, including birth records for his siblings, also appear to indicate that he was born in 1893.

David was my grandfather and after whom I was named.
