Mrs. Evelyn Scruggs Dowd, 73, of 406 Symons St., Pooler, died Tuesday at home after a long illness.
The Candler County native lived in Pooler since 1918 and was a charter member of Rothwell Street Baptist School Class.
She also was a member of the Chatham County School Bus Drivers Association and a former co-owner of Josh Dowd Grocery and Service Station in Pooler. She retired in 1971 after 19 years as a school bus driver for the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education.
Surviving are her husband, Josh Dowd of Pooler; a son, John J. Dowd of Pooler, three sisters, Miss Ruby Jewell Scruggs and Mrs. Earline Prothero, both of Pooler, and Mrs. Uldine Lawson of Guyton; two brothers, Odell J. Scruggs of Lithonia and John H. Scruggs of Bloomingdale; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral: 4 p.m. Thursday at Rothwell Street Baptist Church in Pooler, burial in Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bloomingdale.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dowd will be held 4 p.m. Thursday from Rothwell Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Travis Cowart and Rev. Ira Carver officiating.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to funeral time.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Dowd, Terry Dowd, Stephen Dowd, David Dowd, Wilson Lawson, and Walter Lawson. Members of Bessie Milam Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery.
