NEWELL - Melva Smith Dingess, 88, of Newell, passed away early Sunday morning, Dec. 12, 2010, of asthma and heart failure at East Liverpool City Hospital. She was born April 23, 1922, on Big Laurel, Lincoln Co., W.Va., to Thomas and Stella Adkins Smith. She was the third daughter in a family of six girls. The family moved to the tri-state area when Melva was 10 months old. Melva grew up in Smiths Ferry, where the family lived until the big flood of 1936, which destroyed their home. They moved to Midland, Pa, where she attended high school.
At a young age she began doing housework for people, then got a job at the Woodbine laundry. Later she worked at Curtis Wright factory where she learned to be a welder. After she was married she worked as a handle finisher at the Homer Laughlin China Co. She married Milton Dingess in September, 1943, moving to Newell in 1950. They enjoyed 55 happy, wonderful years together, before he passed away in September of 1998. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many callings. She worked with the youth for many years, loved visiting teaching, and was a member of the building committee; putting on many church dinners to raise money to build a new chapel. She had a great amount of faith and loved going to church on Sunday and serving the Lord.
Melva loved her family and spent many, many hours giving service to family members, and taking care of loved ones who were ill, her parents, her sister, a niece and even her beloved husband. She was a happy person and enjoyed life and had many friends. People loved being with her. One man said she was the kindest person he had ever met. She was the anchor person in her family, everyone always depended on Aunt Melvie to be there for them.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Milton, four sisters, four half sisters and three half brothers.
Melva is survived by a son, Donaldl; a daughter, Judi ; seven grandchildren and spouses; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nelda Daniels of Ohioville; a brother-in-law Junior Dingess of W.Va.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitations will be Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Nixon Funeral Home on 614 Washington St., Newell. Internment will be at Columbiana Memorial Cemetery.
