While picking up coal along the tracks of the New York Central railroad near his home, George Behnke, age 7, was struck by a train and killed near the Seventh North Street bridge. His eight-year-old brother, Arthur, was the only witness.

"The tragic passing of the popular youngster has brought sorrow to the residents of the First Ward. The child's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Behnke, with his little brother and sister, were at the bedside of the dying lad in St. Josephs Hospital a few minutes after the ambulance had removed his mutilated body from the scene of the accident. The boy never regained consciousness to recognize the dear ones at his side. The mother was prostrated. The only eyewitness, the eight-year-old brother, Arthur, was inconsolable for he knew that Georgie was dead.
"The two lads were constant companions. They left home with a little bucket to pick up bituminous coal along the railroad tracks, the neighbors said....
"The child victim stepped out of the path of an eastbound freight on the main line of the Central, railroad officials said. Another fast freight was approaching from the East. The little one did not hear the warning blast of the whistle in time....
"Coroner Crane is conducting an investigation. The child is survived by his parents, a brother, Arthur, and a sister, Mildred."
