He was born 24 September 1883 and baptized Friedrich Gustav Kreft on 3 October 1883 in Kriefkohl (Freiwalde), West Prussia, the oldest child of the maidservant Wilhelmine Kreft and Johann Carl Behnke. At the age of 7 he immigrated to America with his family on the S.S. EIDER, arriving in New York City 25 November 1890. The family settled in Syracuse, where Fred was already working (as a framemaker) by the age of 14. He married Lena Zacholl and they had three children, Mildred, Arthur W., and George F. Behnke. He died a year after his youngest boy, Georgie, was tragically struck and killed by a train near their home.

Mr. Behnke died at his home Thursday night, a victim of pneumonia after a short illness. He was 35 years old and well known on the North Side. The funeral will be held at his home, No. 613 Wolf street, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and later at the German Friedens Evangelical church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

BEHNKE—In this city, October 31st, 1918, FREDERICK A. BEHNKE, aged 35 years. Besides his wife, Lena, he is survived by one son, Arthur, and one daughter, Mildred; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Behnke; two brothers, Charles and Henry Behnke; four sisters, Mrs. Howard Shanklin, Mrs. Stephen Schnurr, Miss Clara and Miss Minnie Behnke.

Funeral services private at the family home, No. 613 Wolf street, Monday at 2 P. M. and at Friedens Evangelical church at 2:30 P. M., to which friends are invited. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
