Samuel Staughton Lynd was a son of Rev. Dr. Samuel W. and Leonora Maria Staughton Lynd. He attended Woodward College in Cincinnati, staying three years studying law. He had a thriving law practice in Cincinnati prior to his sudden death on 4 October, 1880 at the age of 46 from what was probably a seizure brought about by an unknown cause. His tragic death occurred at the home of his sister, Mrs. Henry Snow.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Oct 6, 1880 page 5, Staughton's funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church on Court St at 2 pm on Oct. 6, with private burial following.
