WILLIAM BUNCH
---On Monday evening, July 2, 1923, occurred the death of William Bunch, for the past thirty-five years a resident of La Plata. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Stonecipher of Fayette at the Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2:00.
---Born in Kentucky on September 11, 1839, Mr. Bunch came to this vicinity with the crew in charge of the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1886. He and his wife ran a boarding house at LaCrosse for the workmen, and upon completion of the road they moved to La Plata. For thirty years he was sexton of the cemetery, making a plot of the new ground and keeping a record so complete that he was considered a final authority when any question arose concerning it. When he became too feeble to continue the work actively, he was loath to relinquish the records, and it was often necessary to take him in a car to the cemetery to make some decision as to location of lots. On Friday he went to town and delivered the records to his successor, was unable to leave his bed on Sunday and died Monday evening after only two days of serious illness.
---A touching incident occurred two years ago when Joe Adams, for years care-taker for the Champ Clark home at Bowling Green, learning of the existence of Mr. Bunch, came for a visit. They were mess-mates during the Civil War, both being Confederate veterans. Each had supposed the other dead, and when they were after so many years united, they fell into each others arms, kissing and embracing with such joy that the eyes of beholders were wet with tears.
---Mr. Bunch is survived by his wife, who was Cosby Ann Cook of near Cottage, to whom he was married fifty-seven years ago, August 7, 1866. To them were born four girls and four boys, six of whom survive, Everett of Marceline, a conductor on the Santa Fe, and Eva, now Mrs. Phil Horan of La Plata, are twins, other children are Mrs. H.W. Vreeland of Caddo, Texas, Albert of Marceline, Lige of Kansas and Robert of La Plata. There are six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
---Other immediate relatives are a brother, Pole, of Hunnewell, Kansas, a sister, Lou Baldwin in California, two half-brothers, Rice of Hannibal and Joel of Brookfield.
