William J. "Sock" Clay, 90, of Bloomington, died Thursday at Bloomington Hospital.

Born Nov. 8, 1912, in Clear Creek,
Son of Dillie and Achsah (Hartsock) Clay.

He worked for both the L&N and Monon railroads as a switchman and brakeman, and retired as yard master.

Army veteran of World War II, he served as a paratrooper.

Member of the VFW, Eagles and Moose lodges, and Clear Creek Christian Church.

Survivors include:
Wife, Gertrude F. (Crohn) Clay of Bloomington;
1 son and daughter-in-law, Mark A. and Deborah Clay of Bloomington;
2 grandchildren, Jamie Prince and Travis Clay;
2 great-granddaughters, Baylee Prince and Paris Prince.

Preceded in death by:
Parents;
2 sisters, Catherine Mitchell and Martha Jacobs;
1 brother, Metallis Clay.

Services at Allen Funeral Home, with Glenn Hughes officiating.
Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Clear Creek Christian Church.

1930 Census - William, age 17, is found living with his parents, Dillie & Achsah Clay, in their home located in Perry Township, Monroe County, Indiana. He is employed as a water boy. Sibling listed as Katheryn, Metellus & Martha Clay.

1940 Census - May Grady, age 58, is widowed and living in a rented home located on Summer Street, Hammond, Indiana. Children living in the home were Theodore(33) employed as a motor inspector in a steel mill and Ione(28) employed as machine operator in a Tag Mfg Co. Also living in the home was a lodger William Clay, age 27, he has completed 4 years of high school and is employed as a switch tender for the railroad.
