EBBA CHILDERS
Ebba Swenson was born in St, Cloud nearly ninety years ago, one of eight children. After completing "normal School" at St Cloud, she came to Ely to teach school. She counts Fred Dargontina and Jim Peyla as two of her former students in the elementary school where students were "up to sixth graders."
She married Fred S. Childers and the couple had several children; some who died in infancy; Fred and Robert who passed away in their adulthood. Of the four surviving, Warren lives in Florida; Owen, in Peoria, Ill.; Lyman, in Ely, and Pauline, in Britt.
Ebba loves music; was a good pianist and now sings in the chorus. She reads a lot; the Bible is her daily reading source.
She is witty, gentle humor laces her conversation; and she smiled when she disclosed, "I sleep a lot – and let life come and go." And then with that ready display of quick wit, said, "and I've been taking The Miner for years."
Of her son Frederick C. Childers, who was the publisher of The Ely Miner before his untimely death about ten years ago, she said wistfully, "I can still see him in his printing shop, and coming out of there and walking down the street."
And she spoke with equal pride of her other children – "smart" they are.
Ebba Swenson Childers, a real Lady, added that she could tell us a lot of stories, but they'll have to wait for another time, another day.
