STYNGSBORO - Laverne W. "Sarge" Johnson, a Tyngsboro resident who was a veteran of three wars during four decades of service in the U.S. Army, died Saturday evening, Aug. 21, at Fairhaven Nursing Care Center in Lowell. He was 68.
He was born in Decatur, Ill., on Dec. 31, 1935, a son of the late Elmer and Olethea (Bradshaw) Johnson.
Mr. Johnson served in Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War during a military career that began in 1954 and ended with his honorable discharge in 1995. He retired at the rank of master gunnery sergeant.
He was active in Mason organizations before his illness, and had been a member of the Natic Lodge 1425 and the Bethesoa Lodge AF and AM.
Mr. Johnson's survivors include four sisters, Mary M. Good of East Moline, Ill, Elmyra Schroeder of Decatur, Ill., Shirley Roberts of Highlands Falls, N.Y., and Deanna Sarver of Lansing, Mich. He also leaves his close friends, Donald Tremblay of Pelham, Lorraine Mackey and Edward McCullough, both of Dracut; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late William E., Elmer D., and Robert G. Johnson.
