BOWDLE – Genevieve "Jennie" Dewald, 81, Bowdle, died Saturday, Sept. 15, in Bowdle Hospital.
Genevieve Hoerner was born Jan. 6, 1903, to Baltasser and Elizabeth Hoerner in Bowdle. She attended rural school there. On May 23, 1922, she married Joe G. Dewald in Bowdle. They then lived on the Dewald homestead six miles east of Bowdle and farmed there for 42 years. In 1965, they retired and moved into town.
She was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church and the church altar society.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Edmund (Frieda) and Ralph (Bernice) both of Bowdle; Edward (Florence) and James (Karen) both of Cudahy, Wis.; and Charles (Judy) of Burbank, Calif.; six daughters, Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) Senn and Mrs. Harlin (Carol) Knecht both of Aberdeen; Mrs. Jerome (Jeanette) Gosh of Cudahy, Wis., Mrs. Carl (Delphina) Sanborn of Ipswich, Mrs. Marvin (Betty) Hochstetter of Brookings, Mrs. James (Carlotta) Serena of Iron River, Mich.; two brothers, Leo (Florence) Hoerner of Ipswich, Tony Hoerner of Sioux Falls; a sister, Mrs. Martin (Ann) Abler of Hoven; 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, six brothers, three sisters, one grandson.
Services were Wednesday in Bowdle with burial St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle.
