HOUSTON – Robert Byron Wilson, 84, passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at NMMC in Tupelo after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 27, 1926, to James Leonard and Melinda Elizabeth Ford Wilson in Houston in Chickasaw County.

He attended Houston School and graduated high school in 1945. After graduation, he entered the service and received his training at Keesler Field. He was a World War II veteran. He served as an airplane mechanic in the Air Force. He spent time in Germany, France and Belgium. He loved his country and kept up with the world news. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, and president of the Sparta Water Association.

He loved music and attended all the Homecoming, Relay For Life, Sweet Potato Festival, Jesus Thang, and other performances set up by Sonora Sound Productions.

He enjoyed sports and played football for the Hilltoppers. He didn't miss many of his sons' and grandchildren's ball games. His saying was, "We're going to lose a crop going to the ball games." He sponsored the American Legion Baseball team in Houston.

He was devoted to his family and grandchildren. Lanny and Jeffery were taught to be carpenters, electricians, plumbers and draftsmen. He was looking forward to seeing his other great-grandchildren that are due to be born this year.

He was a lifetime member of Prospect United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School several years and was a trustee. He was an excellent reader and read the Sunday School scripture every Sunday. He always had a comical joke to cheer the class on, and never forgot a joke.

After returning home from service, he attended Mississippi State University, majoring in mechanical engineering.

His first job was as a draftsman on the first cotton picker with International Harvester in Memphis.

After the death of his father, he moved back to Houston at the home place, caring for his mother for 32 years, and helping his brother, Johnny, get through four years of high school. He entered the farming and dairying business for 23 years.

He received his Civil Engineering degree from ICS in Scranton, Pa. He taught for five years at ICC in Tupelo; the first Engineer Technology Program to be taught at ICC.

He worked 25 years for the Department of Transportation. Since his retirement, he worked part-time with Springer Engineering as an inspector on the county and state jobs.

When at home, he was in his woodwork shop, drafting and making crafts, especially for the Houston Parish Bazaar.

Services will be today(Tuesday, July 12) at Prospect United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery. Houston Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of the arrangements. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Patrick and Rev. Jane Houser, and the eulogy by Lana Whitworth. Visitation will be today at Houston Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church beginning at 2 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Lois Lancaster Wilson; his two sons, Lanny and Alice Wilson, and Jeffery and Donna Wilson of Houston; his three grandchildren, Brian and Misty Wilson of Santa Rosa, Fla., Hanna Wilson of Houston, and Kyle Wilson of Houston; his two stepgrandsons, David White of Houston, and Derek and Casey White of Hernando; his stepgreat-granddaughter, Claire Olivia White; his brother, James Ford Wilson of Baltimore, Md.; his sister, Mary Emma Abernathy of Gulfport; his sister-in-law, Nancy Wilson of Columbus; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Johnny Wilson.

Pallbearers will be Alan Whitworth, Walt Dallas, Steven Sullivan, David White, Derek White, Brian Wilson, Doug Love and Daryl Love.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Lancaster, Glenn Henry, Ed Springer and employees of Springer Engineering, employees of Sonora Sound Productions, members of Prospect United Methodist Church, and past employees of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
