Hettie was the fifth child of William S. Torrance and Mary Jane Whitcomb. She was born July 14, 1860, at Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon.

At Colfax, Washington, on December 28, 1880, Hettie married Leroy Stilson, a New York-born wheat farmer at nearby Diamond. Leroy and Hettie raised ten children. Sadly, Leroy died at age 54 while in Idaho. Hettie then moved to Spokane, where she remained with a few of her adult children until her death at age 79.
