James H. Tharp, 71, of Jefferson, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born April 17, 1942, in Sycamore, a son of the late William A. and Irene Toland Tharp.

Mr. Tharp was a 1960 graduate of West Greene High School and served in the U.S. Army.

He was a retired coal miner from BethEnergy in Ellsworth.

Mr. Tharp was a member of United Mine Workers of America, American Legion Post 954, Jefferson, and Disabled American Veterans Post 123, Waynesburg.

He loved riding four-wheelers and hunting.

On June 7, 1970, he married Lyvonne Ball, who survives.Also surviving are six children, Lisa A. (John) Bennett of Waynesburg, Michelle (Kevin) Friday of Greensboro, Tracy (Greg) Sova of Reedsville, W.Va., Heidi (Joey Dickey) Tharp of Jefferson, Jet (Stacy Short) Tharp of Waynesburg and Todd (Benita) Tharp of Jefferson; two sisters, Erma Jean Tharp of Waynesburg and Madolyn (John) Crooker of Prentiss Township, Maine; a brother, Harry (Carol) Tharp of Sycamore; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, William A. Tharp, who died in infancy, and Herbert D. Tharp, and three sisters, LaVaughn Petitt, Margaret Johnston and Margie Oliphant.

Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, PA 15344, Gregory P. Rohanna, supervisor, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, with the Rev. Matthew D. Chapell officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville. Graveside military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 954, Jefferson. Condolences may be expressed at www.behm-funeralhomes.com.
