Herbert D. Tharp, 85, of Sycamore, died at 2:44 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, with his family by his side.

He was born September 20, 1926, in Claysville, a son of the late William A. and Irene Toland Tharp.

Mr. Tharp attended school in Center Township and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In his early years, he worked for the former Bishop's Creamery in Waynesburg, where he had a milk pickup route. Later, he worked at the former Curry Memorial Home in Waynesburg and retired from West Greene School District in the early 1990s.

On November 22, 1952, he married Mary Lou Brewer, who died October 15, 2000.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas E. Tharp and wife Joyce of Wind Ridge and Jeffrey L. Tharp and wife Sheila of Waynesburg; six daughters, Evelyn D. Kelly of Waynesburg, Loretta K. Lemley and husband Joe of Sycamore, Cynthia L. Cox and husband John of Waynesburg, Patricia S. Tharp of Garards Fort, Pamela A. Mateleska and husband John of Sycamore and Janet E. Kush of Jeannette; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry R. Tharp and wife Carol of Sycamore and James E. Tharp and wife Lavonne of Jefferson; two sisters, Erma Jean Tharp of Waynesburg and Madeline Crooker and husband John of Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three infant children, Paul Randall Tharp, Dale Michael Tharp and Sharon Louise Tharp; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Kelly; three sisters, Margaret Johnston, Marjorie Oliphant and Lavaughn Pettit; and two half sisters, Kathryn Kalist and Blanche Courtwright.

Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where a funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 4. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville, with full military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Youth Group of First United Methodist Church, 104 West South Street, Carmichaels, PA 15320, or to a youth group of the donor's choice.
